Typical Schedule

The program requires three 4-credit courses required in the summer term (there are four for the polymer sequence). They generally begin in late June and end early September. Theses courses are all day and will require all of your time, leaving little room for additional jobs. During the academic year (fall, winter, spring) your registration schedule will look like one of the scenarios below. Your scenario will depend primarily on the location and timing of your internship.

Internships

While you are in your internship, you will be required to register for at least 10 credits a term. During the internship students are asked to write a 3 page paper (1” margins, 12pt font, single spaced) each term to discuss their activities and lessons learned. The paper should not be so specific that it infringes on any secrecy agreements. The paper is due on the Monday of finals week. It can be sent via email to Chris Larson at cslarson@uoregon.edu.

Advising

During summer term, you must make an appointment to see the graduate advisor in the Chemistry or Physics Dept to discuss your degree plan and to make sure that the courses you plan to take are approved to apply to your Master's Degree. You will not be able to register for your fall internship credits until you meet with an advisor.

Registration and Tuition

The MSI Master's program summer courses and internship credits are administered through the Continuation Center-Continuing Education. Registration for these courses and internship credits is done via Duck Web. Tuition for Continuing Ed credits is $340/credit. Tuition is charged at the same rate for resident and non-resident students. There are no other fees associated with these credits.

As a matriculated graduate student you are eligible for financial aid. For more information, please contact the financial aid office at http://financialaid.uoregon.edu or 1-800-760-6953.

To complete your Master's degree you will need to take at least 6 graded graduate courses totaling 24 credits. Three courses (four for Polymer Sequence) are offered in the summer and the other three (two for Polymer Students) can be taken during the regular academic year (fall, winter and spring terms). For UO courses you will register for these courses via Duck Web. You will need to contact the registrar to get access to your duckweb account (this also allows you to access your term grades and transcripts). Tuition is charged at the regular graduate rate, the estimate for 2006-2007 is:

Over time charges for each additional hour beyond 16 credits are charged at the rate of $337.00 for resident students and $507.00 for non-resident students.

Access to Facilities

While you are registered through Continuing Education, you will not be eligible for access to recreation facilities, free student tickets to sporting events, or access to the Student Health Center. However, while you are on campus during the summer you can sign up for Student Health Center privileges for a fee of ~$73 for the summer. You will need to fill out the form and give it to Chris Larson during the first week of summer term to obtain access to the Health Center. During the Academic Year while you are working at your internship you will not be eligible for Student Health Center access unless you are taking a course through the regular Graduate Program.

Joint Campus Program

If you will be interning out of the Eugene area and wish to take graduate courses at OSU, PSU or SOU, please complete the attached form “MSI Course Approval Template”. The forms need to be submitted to your advisors for approval. Please submit these forms three weeks before the start of the term. Courses will be charged at $340/credit.

NON-Oregon University System Schools:

To take courses at schools other than in the JC program, you must petition the UO Graduate School for permission. The Graduate School permits the transfer of a maximum of 15 credits towards a master’s degree. Typically, these are pass/fail credits. However, to transfer graded course credits requires permission. The General Petition is available on-line at http://gradschool.uoregon.edu/academic_forms.html. Once the courses are completed you will have to complete the Request to Transfer Credit form and submit official transcripts of your course work to the Graduate school. To enroll in these courses, you register through the NON-OUS school’s registrar.

Graduation

To graduate, please notify the Graduate School and your major department at the beginning of the term your degree requirements will be completed (Spring term for most of you). The Graduate School requires you complete a form (big surprise!). It is available at http://gradschool.uoregon.edu/advanced-degree_app.html. The departments request that you email them when you complete the form. They will then complete the Statement of Completion of Requirements for the Graduate school and include your name in the graduation festivities at the end of spring term.
