X-ray Crystallography - Dr. Fusen Han
| A brand new small molecule crystallographic instrument was installed in Nov 2003. The "Smart Apex CCD Area Detector System" developed and made by Bruker Axs Inc. is the new generation of the x-ray diffraction equipment. It is equipped with a SMART APEX CCD Area Detector, a Fine Focus sealed X-ray tube using Mo-K(alpha) radiation, a MonoCap collimator for increased X-ray beam intensity, and an Oxford Cryostream device to allow data collection at temperatures as low as -160 C. Also available is the Enraf-Nonius CAD-4 Turbo Diffractometer | |||||||||||||||||
| The main advantages of this new system are: | |||||||||||||||||
| • |
Fast data collection: An entire data set can be collected within 6 hours.
| • | Smaller crystal samples: Monocap collimator increases x-ray intensity up to six times. | ||||||||||||||||
| • | More powerful software: From data collection to structure solution, the instrument is equipped with a new set of powerful computer software for dealing with more difficult crystal samples and structures. | ||||||||||||||||
| • | Very easy to operate: GUI interface makes it possible for non-crystallographers to use it for routine structure determinations. | ||||||||||||||||
| • | Low temperature: Can collect data at -120 C, which stabilizes the sample during the experiment and provides higher quality data. | ||||||||||||||||
