| Overview: |
Students completing their first year of college come to the U of O for a paid 10-week summer research internship. Students return to their home campus for their second year of college, where they conduct outreach to help others succeed in science and math. Students receive a stipend for their summer research and for outreach hours during the 2011-12 academic year. |

$3900 for 10 weeks, plus room and board in UO dorms (double room shared with another UCORE student). |

The program begins with a week-long workshop at the University of Oregon to prepare students for their summer research experience. Students are then placed in research labs at the University of Oregon for an eight-week research experience. Students work under the guidance of graduate students on projects in Chemistry, Physics, or Geology laboratories. During the final week students present their summer research to their peers and advisors, receive career counseling, and prepare for their duties over the next year as a 'UCORE Fellow.'
Upon return to their home colleges, UCORE Fellows are paid for work as tutors and mentors to other community college students. Under the guidance of their community college UCORE advisor, Fellows are expected to undertake activities to inform other students about their summer research experience. They may work as tutors for selected courses. Fellows are also expected to help coordinate several events throughout the year. These events inform other students of possibilities and paths available for continuing on to a four-year degree in physical sciences, and of career options for those pursuing a science education. |
