The program begins with a week-long
workshop at the University of Oregon to prepare students
for their summer research experience. They will then be placed
in research labs at the University of Oregon for an 8-week
research experience. Students will work under the guidance
of graduate students on projects in Chemistry, Physics, or
Geology laboratories. During the final week students will
present their summer research to their peers and advisors,
receive career counseling, and prepare for their duties over
the next year as a 'UCORE Fellow.'
Upon return to their home colleges, UCORE Fellows
will be paid for work as tutors and mentors to other community
college students. Fellows will be expected to undertake activities
under the supervision of their community college (or UO,
as appropriate) UCORE advisor that inform their fellow students
about what they learned as a result of their summer experience.
They may work as tutors for selected courses. Fellows will
also be expected to help coordinate several events throughout
the year. These events will inform students of possibilities
and paths available for continuing on to a 4-year degree
in physical sciences and of career options obtainable to
those pursuing a science education. |
